ROCK CITY MARATHON 2011





Godfrey Chacha from Mara and Arusha’s Jackline Juma won the Rock City Marathon 2011 titles in the men and women disciplines here over the weekend.
Chacha clocked 61.03.44 to outsmart over 100 rivals while Jackline timed 1:15.22 to claim the title. She beat 30 others.
Mohammed Gulle from Arusha prevailed in the men’s five-kilometre race, beating Dotto Ikangaa, also from Arusha and Pascal Ramadhan from Singida.
The race which started in 2009 has been organized by Capital-Plus International (CPI), an integrated communications firm based in Dar es Salaam and sponsored by Airtel, Geita Gold Mine, Air Tanzania Company Limited, Parastatal Pensions Fund (PPF), Bank M, MOIL, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), New Mwanza Hotel, and the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB).
The Mwanza Regional Police Commander Liberatus Balo who was the guest of honour at the event said he was impressed by the private sector's efforts to promote sports in the country and asked more companies to come forward and do the same.
"Sports can become a good source of income and alleviate poverty if the private sector plays a bigger role", he said.
On his part, the Secretary General of Athletics Tanzania (AT) Suleiman Nyambui said that Rock City Marathon has proved to be a big success as years tick by.
"I am very proud of this event and the future is very bright", Mr Nyambui,former Olympic medalist said.
Runners from different regions across the country as well as Canada, Australia, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda took part.
The 21-kilometre winners took home medals and 500,000/- each while the runners up were given 300,000/- each.
Third finishers took home 200,000/- and for the forth up to 12 place each runner was awarded 90,000/- plus Tsh. 30,000/- for those who will be in the 13th up to 50th places will receive Tsh. 30,000/- for their participation.
Winners in the five and three-kilometre race also took home cash prizes and medals.
